After three years of informal leadership and organization under Richard Robert Wright, Sr., the Georgia Teachers Association was officially founded in 1880. The aim of the organization was to secure equal privileges for all children regardless of their race or color. In 1917, a parallel association formed, called the Georgia Association for the Advancement of Education Among Negroes (GAAE). In 1921, the GAAE and the GTA formally consolidated and formed the Georgia Teachers and Education Association (GTEA), which became the longest running teacher association in the state. The GTEA merged with the Georgia Education Association (GEA) in 1970.
