- Civil Rights Digital Library An online, open-access database of photographs and documents related to the Civil Rights and Black Power movements.
- HBCU Digital Collection A digital collection of primary resources from member libraries of the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Library Alliance primarily highlighting founding and early historical documents. Colored Conventions Project
Colored Conventions Project Starting in 1830 and continuing until well after the Civil War, free, freed and self-emancipated Blacks gathered for in state and national political conventions. The convention minutes collected here illustrate the immense struggles and the profound courage of those who insisted on organizing and standing for what was rightly theirs.
Teachers in the Movement
Teachers in the Movement explores teachers’ ideas and pedagogy inside and outside the classroom during the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. From teachers themselves, we learn how their pedagogy, curricula, and community work were instrumental forms of activism that influenced the movement.

Resource Guides
- The Black Teacher Archive open-resource guide identifies open-access databases to provide context and additional background information for Colored Teacher Associations.
- The Monroe C. Gutman Library’s guide, African American Education 1740-1974, offers a collection of books, databases, and archival sources on the history of African American primary and secondary education in the United States. Many resources require a Harvard affiliation to view.
- Library of Congress African American Studies Research Guide compiles databases, primary resources (including rare books, photographs, and manuscripts), and digitized objects at the Library of Congress.
- National Archives and Records Administration Guide to African American Education compiles primary sources, surveys, and government documents regarding African American education from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Bibliographic Resources
The Black Teacher Archive team maintains a record of bibliographical citations of works that discuss Colored Teacher Associations. These citations are maintained using Zotero, a reference management software. They include dissertations, peer-reviewed articles, and monographs as well as web encyclopedia entries.
