Kentucky
The State Association of Teachers in Colored Schools was organized in Frankfort, Kentucky by Kentucky State University’s first president John H. Jackson in 1877. The organization underwent three variations of names including the Kentucky Association of Teachers in Colored Schools, the Kentucky Negro Education Association (K.N.E.A), and lastly Kentucky Teachers’ Association (KTA). The Teachers’ Association main objective was to create, “An Equal Educational Opportunity for Every Kentucky Child.” The organization’s primary mission was to send a committee to the Kentucky General Assembly to advocate for improvements in black schools. In 1956 the KTA was subsumed into the Kentucky Education Association.
