While local Black teacher organizations existed as early as 1861, the call for a national association occured in the winter of 1903. A formal organization called the National Colored Teachers Association met in Nashville, Tennessee in 1904. The association’s objective was to promote education, better teaching methods, and cooperation between teachers to adapt to community needs. Serving as the umbrella organization to the state affiliates, this national association was the counterpart to the National Education Association.
