In 1893, fourteen years before Oklahoma became a state, the teachers of Oklahoma County organized the Ida B. Wells Teachers Association in Oklahoma City. It consisted of 14 Negro teachers and was led by Jefferson Davis Randolph as president. In 1907, a month after Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory were united as the state of Oklahoma, 67 teachers of the former twin territories met at Langston University to organize themselves into the Oklahoma Association of Negro Teachers (OANT). Mr. J. H. A. Brazleton, Oklahoma City School Principal, was elected president of the Association. In 1955, OANT merged with the Oklahoma Education Association.
