West Virgnia
The West Virginia State Teachers Association officially began on November 27, 1891 as a “reading circle” in Charleston, Virginia. The purpose of the organization was to train teachers and develop a space where black educators could have their needs articulated and recognized. The association provided a statewide forum where black teachers could consider matters affecting their profession and the education of black youth in West Virginia. The West Virginia State Teachers Association merged shortly after the decision in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 with the all-white West Virginia Education Association.
